Pests and diseases have increased dramatically in recent years. Plant diseases and pests are widely considered as an important cause of crop losses, and sometimes a threat to the food supply.

At a global scale, pathogens and pests are causing wheat losses of 10 percent to 28 percent, rice losses of 25 percent to 41 percent, maize losses of 20 percent to 41 percent, potato losses of 8 percent to 21 percent, and soybean losses of 11 percent to 32 percent, according to the journal Nature, Ecology & Evolution.
Hence to manage crops and diseases effectively and at minimal costs, one must understand the pests’ life cycles, feeding habits, damages they cause and their natural enemies. Crops need to be protected from loss or damage from pests and diseases. It is important to correctly identify the pest, disease or disorder so that the problem can be effectively treated.
Identifying symptoms and knowing when and how to effectively control diseases is an ongoing challenge.
